Arnold, of St. Peters EpiscopalChurch, uplifted the hearts of the mourners with a powerfulbenediction upon the flag covered body—the soul was inHis Hands—and those assembled to do it reverence, andthen the people moved quietly out to their homes, leavingthe guards to preserve the spirit of the services. The undertaker opened the casket on the morning of the17th for the formal purpose of identification, and the re-mains were found to be in a perfect state of preservationowing to the effective embalming by the army undertakerin Porto Rico; if a little coloring had been added to theface, the dead would have appeared as if in natural sleep. . When the train reached Byron a great concourse of peo-ple were found in waiting. Company G, Thirty-third 340 1 .
