English: Grazing on a recently burned area, near Cockley Bushes, New Forest This area of heath was subjected to 'controlled burning' about a week ago - the idea is to control the spread of scrub, and to improve the grazing for commoners' stock such as the pony standing here in the stream. The burning is carried out during March because the scrub should be dry enough to burn, while the ground is sufficiently damp to avoid scorching. In the distance, on the far side of Ditchend Brook, is Godshill Ridge.
