Archbishop Pinto was born in Bari, Italy on May 26, 1952. He was ordained as a priest on April 1, 1978 and holds a doctorate in Canon Law. He is fluent in Italian, French, English and Spanish. He entered the Diplomatic Service of the Holy See on May 1, 1984, and has served successively in Papua New Guinea, Argentina and the Secretariat of State in Vatican City. He also served as apostolic nuncio to Senegal, Cape Verde, Mali and Guinea-Bissau, and has been assigned as Apostolic Delegate to Mauritania. Prior to his current appointment, the archbishop was apostolic nuncio in Chile since 2007. A Papal or Apostolic Nuncio is the permanent diplomatic representative of the Holy See to a state or international organization.
