DescriptionChicago Volunteer Firefighters Memorial by Leonard Volk -- Rosehill Cemetery Chicago (IL) April 2012 (6943021748).jpg
This memorial was erected in 1864 to honor Chicago's volunteer firefighters. It was re-dedicated in 1979.
The memorial was designed by Leonard Volk, who is also buried at Rosehill Cemetery.
Volk (1828 - 1895) was a famous Chicago-based sculptor, noted for for making one of only two life masks of President Abraham Lincoln.
Volk also made several large monumental sculptures, including the tomb of the politician and Volk's brother-in-law Stephen A. Douglas in Chicago, statues of American Civil War figures (including Rosehill's 'Our Heroes' monument), and the firefighters memorial shown above where a fireman stands atop a tall column, around the base of which is wrapped a fire hose. Four old-style hydrants make up the corners of this memorial. The granite marker at the base contains the names of Chicago firefighters killed in the line of duty.
