English: Built in 1907-1926, this Byzantine Revival and Romanesque Revival-style building was designed by Barnett, Haynes and Barnett to serve as a new Cathedral for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of St. Louis, with work continuing on the building’s interior decoration until 1988, and was finally elevated to the status of a Minor Basilica in 1997. The building features a gray granite exterior with a green tile roof, two towers with hipped roofs, a large dome with a lantern, a drum with buttresses featuring ionic columns, roman arched stained glass windows and door bays, semi-circular apses on the east, west, and north sides of the building, and a rose window above the front entrance on the south facade. Inside, the church features vaulted and flat mosaic tile ceilings, arches lined with mosaic tiles, Romanesque columns with decorative capitals, marble wall cladding, stone floors, a large altar with stone columns and a dome, mimicking the large dome of the building itself, and carved wooden pews. The cathedral today continues to serve as the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of St. Louis, and is a significant landmark in the city’s Central West End neighborhood.
