I sentyou a leaf fromx my memorandum book from the field ofGettysburg on the 4th, just to say I was safe, and I hopeyou received it. A citizen said he would take it to York.Since then we have been on the move constantly. I havenot seen my portfolio till this morning, and had nothing towrite on if I had had time. 162 Text Appearing After Image: STRONG VINCENT. If the Mississippihad any special relation to the monster, it certainly is, foryesterday we received official information that the river wasopen. At Gettysburg I think we broke the ribs on oneside. At all events we came nearer to it than we ever didbefore. Oh, that was a terrible fight! I rode over a greatpart of the ground on the left, on the 5th, and of all thecarnage I ever saw that was the most horrible. All over thefield were scattered black and bloated corpses of men. anddead horses, wrecks of caissons and gun carriages. I wasgalloping along the road when all at once my horse sprangto one side, and looking to see what started him, I saw thebodies of thirteen rebels lying in the mud with the pitilessrain beating on their ghastly faces.
