Salut, Clio.

Please, inform me and Latouffedisco when you finish the list (don't care about wikification), we are currently working on two separate version of the list, that in the end will be merged (mine is here). One suggestion: first of all copy the list from the book (add comments, if you think, but don't erase any player! I speak from personal past experiences...), and then make another list (a copy of the original) when you do all the edits, so if you (or another person) make wrong edits, we have the raw original version as a reference (and it could be usefull for us to have a basic list to work on). Good work and many thanks! --Necronudist

Hi Clio, thank you very much for sharing this information. For someone interested in the history of Hungarian and Austrian football this list simply is a treasure trove. Nearly all players from these countries that I knew of playing in France are on this list (and numerous more), except for one: according to two separate sources (one Hungarian, one German) the Hungarian international Zoltán Opata had two stints in Division 1, playing for OSC Lille in 1932/33 (at least that's what the sources say, presumably this should read Olympique Lillois) and for Racing Paris in 1934/35. As he is not on this list, I wonder if these sources are incorrect or if Barreaud ommitted him. Maybe you can clarify this issue? Thank you, --Karloff lugosi (fr) 23 août 2007 à 19:55 (CEST)[répondre]

Just to help: he was born in Romania and his Romanian name was Ormos Patai, AFAIK he played for Hungária FC in 1932-33 season. --Necronudist
sorry for the delay, but it was a tough question. I check every sources I have, and no Zoltán Opata or Ormos Patai did play in French Division 1 at that time. For the 34-35 at Racing Paris, that's 100% sure. I have all the lists of the players who played in D1 in 34-35 in the 1936 Football Almanach. I also have the 1933 edition, but they don't give all the players with the games played and the goals scored. I check books about Lille, phone to a guy who know very well that club and check some modern Football Guides who give the players of Lille in 32-33 (they were champions) and nobody name this player. Clio64 28 août 2007 à 01:50 (CEST)[répondre]
Thank you very much for your extensive research, this is really appreciated. You confirmed my suspision, that those two sources most likely are wrong, which is quite astonishing, considering that one of these sources is by a renowned Hungarian football historian. You can find this information here on page 279 (PDF format). --Karloff lugosi (fr) 30 août 2007 à 22:15 (CEST)[répondre]
Barreaud is also a "solid source" (Thèse de doctorat...), but some datas are false... I don't know no "solid source" without errors... That's part of the game Émoticône. Those two historians worked with there own sources, and never mixed them. We can do that with internet now, and, for sure, the list will be better after that work. Clio64 3 septembre 2007 à 06:33 (CEST)[répondre]

Maybe I can help you on some of the Austrian players, so let me start with the internationals on your list:

  • de:Josef Schneider (Fußballspieler) was an Austrian international
  • Are you sure that the player named Georg Watz isn't actually Georg Waitz, who played one A-international in 1932, while playing his club football for FC Nicholson?
    • Barreaud call him "Georg Watz" (p.30)... and he was playing for "Nicholson Vienna". I think that's the guy. To help you, I can give you (sometimes) the last club of the player before coming in France. Barreaud have that kind of data for about 40% of the players of the 30's. It can help. Clio64 3 septembre 2007 à 05:45 (CEST)[répondre]
  • Viktor Spechtl was a B-international and in Austria Vienna's lineup when they won the 1933 Mitropacup
  • Josef Gottwald was a B-international, playing for Brigittenauer AC
  • Imre Mausner also was a B-international, playing for Hakoah
  • Ludwig Stroh was another B-international, playing for FC Nicholson

--Karloff lugosi (fr) 30 août 2007 à 23:54 (CEST)[répondre]

thanks a lot for your help. I have problems with some first name because the French football newspapers of the 30's used only the family name... And sometimes, it was phonetic (Becic become Becitch, for exemple). If you (or anybody) have data about those players, you're welcome!! Clio64 3 septembre 2007 à 05:45 (CEST)[répondre]
I will be able to work on your list when I will be back home in late september. Presently I don't have any of my sources with me, so this will have to wait until then. However Paul Acht most likely is the Hungarian international and Ujpest goalkeeper Janos Aknai-Acht [1]. And Hermann Lettner could actually be Hermann Leitner. --Karloff lugosi (fr) 12 septembre 2007 à 17:53 (CEST)[répondre]

Let me start with the Hungarian internationals I could identify:

  • Mihály Eőry was a one time international (1933 against Austria) who played for Bocskai Debrecen
  • Mátyás Korányi (also Korányi II) played for Szeged and four times for the national team (1932-35)
  • Hermann Lettner could be Hermann Leitner, who played once for the national team (1925 against Austria) and for Ujpest
  • János Móré played for Bocskai Debrecen and Ferencváros, he was a three time international (1933-34) and an unused substitute at the 34 world cup
  • József Vágó also played for Bocskai and 13 times for Hungary (1934-37, among those one game at the 34 world cup)
  • Károly Finta (Barreaud lists him as Czechoslovakian) was a Hungarian B international in 1937 and played two matches for the Hungarian A team in 1940 (supposedly after his return from France, as he was with Ferencváros at the time)
  • As for Jenő Szabó, there was a one time international by this name, but this was in 1921, so I doubt that this would be the player, who was in Sochaux until 1939
  • Now to the mysterious Mr.Sas. I think Barreaud mixes up two biographies. Ferenc Sas played for MTK Hungária in the period in question (34-38), see for example the team photo at the bottom of this page. He also played 17 times for the Hugarian national team between 36 and 38, this would hardly be imaginable, had he played abroad. On the other hand there was clearly a player named Sas, who played in the French D1, as early as the 33/34 season (I found a short article on a match between the city selections of Paris und Budapest in January 34, where Sas and Berkessy represented Paris). A clue to who this second Sas was, might be this OM fan page, that covers the career of a player named Károly Sas. I think this would be in line with your paper source, that gives the player's first name as "Charles".
  • By the way, István Zavadszky (or actually István Závodi-Zavadszky) was also an international, playing twice for Hungary in 1932 --Karloff lugosi (fr) 27 septembre 2007 à 18:59 (CEST)[répondre]

Here is the next bunch. From now on there will be mainly non-internationals, which means that these players rarely (if ever) are covered in reference works. So information will often have to come from the source, i.e. 1930s newspapers. And this will mean two things: first names will not always be available (there's the same problem with Austrian newspapers from this period as with French) and players will be covered as I come along their information, so there will be no real structure. Having said this, these are the relatively easy ones:

  • de:Ignace Tax was an Austrian playing for Wacker and First Vienna before leaving for Geneva and then for St.Etienne
  • Jenö Stern was a Hungarian who played for Hakoah Vienna from 28 to 33, after his year in Paris he emigrated to Palestine
  • Ferenc Odry played for Nemzeti and Bocskai Debrecen, I found information that in France he might not only have played for St.Etienne, but also for Troyes, Lille, Cannes and Lyon
  • Witasky is probably Heinrich "Vita" Vitasky, who played for Libertas and later for Wiener Sportclub, in late 39 (after the annexation) he once represented the B city selection of Vienna
  • Pal Zilahi played for 3rd Distric Budapest and Bocskai before going to France
  • Jawurek (or more often Jaburek) was Austrian according to newspapers from the period (Barreaud lists him as Czechoslovakian), he played for Wiener Sportclub and First Vienna before his time at Racing Paris and returned in March 34, playing for FC Wien
  • István (not Istvais) Gyulai played for Bocskai Debrecen before going to Rennes
  • Zwiebel was a forward for Hakoah Vienna from 33 to 36, one source gives his first name as "Serge"
  • As for the Hungarian "Imre Windner", I think this is the Austrian Anton Windner who played for Simmering and Wacker until 1933 and newspapers claimed in early 1934 that the "Austrian player Windner" now plays for Lille
  • In February 1934 the Czechoslovakian federation gave permission to the two SK Nachod players Kuchta and Nyvelt to transfer to France and play for Nimes. At the same session transfer permission was also granted to another Czech player I could not find on your list. This player's name is Raftl, he formerly played for Reichenberg and moved to US Cannes. Newspapers reported that he scored a hattrick in his first game against Sète.
The 1935 Football almanch call that player Kastl (He scored 6 goals that season for Cannes in D1). Barreaud call him Kastl and put him with the austrian players. Clio64 2 octobre 2007 à 09:42 (CEST)[répondre]
You're right about this one, that was bad reading on my side (bad quality copy article, old German letters).--Karloff lugosi (fr) 14 octobre 2007 à 12:21 (CEST)[répondre]

Furthermore I have come across a number of players not on your list. Many of them are ommitted as you only list D1 players, so players that played for D2 teams are evidently not listed (such as Austrian internationals Karl Adamek and Karl Szoldatics, both playing for Le Havre, or Hungarian international Ferenc Hirzer (St. Servan)). But on some occasions I only have the information that a player was at a certain club, but no information on the year(s) he was there, so I can't tell whether this was in D1 or D2, in case the club played in both divisions at certain times. In other cases I don't even know the club. These names include:

  • Ferenc Weinhardt, Hungarian national goalkeeper, I only have the information that he played for the regional selection of Normandy in 34 together with Adamek, Szoldatics and Kalmar
  • Austrians Schreiber and Hahn played in the city selection of Bordeaux
  • Austrian Ondrey played for Amiens
  • Hungarian Gyula Alberti played for Le Havre
  • Hungarian international János Gyarmati played for Red Star Paris
  • Hunagrian Belá Nagy played for Olympique Lille
  • Hungarian Károly Kósa played for Rouen
  • Hungarian Sándor Janda played for Sète
  • Hungarian Sándor Szécsi (Szusza) played for Racing Paris

--Karloff lugosi (fr) 2 octobre 2007 à 00:59 (CEST)[répondre]

I will only be able to add to the list sparsely over the next few weeks. But it seems I can confirm the two Norwegians, although Thörger Nordbo actually was Norway international Thoger Nordby. For details see here and here. As for the Italians, this and this might be helpful. The Poles Stanislas Laczny and Staho are obviously the same person and he has an article as Stanislas Staho. And I can confirm Romanian de:Rudolf Wetzer.

Here is a number auf Austrians I can confirm (first names is sometimes a problem, we'll have to deal with this later):

  • Hans Babineck (or Babinek) (OK) formerly with Wacker
  • Leopold Eckenhofer (OK) formerly with FC Wien
  • Franz Hauswirth (OK) formerly with Simmering and Wacker
  • Koenig (OK) formerly also with Austria, first name probably Ludwig
  • Rudolf Kumhofer (OK) formerly with Rapid reserves, after his return with Austria Klagenfurt, became Rapid coach in 1958 [2]
  • Johann Moser (OK) formerly with Burgtheater
  • Wilhelm Schaden (or Schadn) (OK) formerly with First Vienna
  • Franz Kekeiss (or Keckeis) (OK) formerly with Slovan (Barreaud lists him as Hugarian)
  • Franz Kurka (OK) formerly with Wacker (Barreaud lists him as Czechoslovakian)
  • Imre Windner is definitively Austrian Anton Windner (OK) (Barreaud lists him as Hugarian, see above)
  • God Hawlicek (Barreaud list him as Czechoslovakian) is actually Gottlieb Havlicek (see here). Barreaud also mentions that after his time in Strasbourg and Charleville he played for Longwy in 36/37, but that was Eduard Havlicek, while Gottlieb played for Pontoise in D3 that season.
  • Cernicky (1932-38 Fives) (OK), this is Franz Czernicky, an Austrian international, formerly with Slovan Vienna and Slavia Prague (Barreaud lists him as Czechoslovakian), according to Austrian newspapers he played in an all-foreign defense, which was among the best in the league. Goalkeeper was the German Dalheimer (see below), Czernicky was right back and Gonzales from Algiers was left back.
  • Franz Flach (OK)
  • Josef Hanke (OK), formerly with WAC and FAC
  • Johann Blaschek (OK), formerly with Wacker
  • Karl Myrka (OK), originally Mrkvicka, formerly with Simmering and WAC
  • Franz Freiberger (OK), formerly with Wacker
  • Wackt, should probably read Wacht (OK), was with WAC reserves before going to France, later played at Piešťany in ČSR and at WAC
  • Johann Hoffmann (OK), was an Austrian A international (once in 1929), formerly with Rapid and BAC (Barreaud lists him as German)
  • Rudolf Hudecek (Antibes) (OK)

Some names of Austrian players that I found which are not on the list:

  • Karl Gall (Austrian A international, part of the legendary Wunderteam), Mulhouse from 36 (I wonder how Barreaud missed that one)
  • Anton Artes (Vienna international), at Rouen at least from 1934-37
  • Franz Sattler (see here) formerly with SV Donau
  • Leopold Facco (twice A international), Metz (or Lille) in 35
  • Ullrich, Metz in 35, formerly with FC Wien, returned in 36 to Wiener Sportclub
  • Alfred Kern (formerly FavSC) and Pawanek, both Antibes in 35
  • Kern is OK ; but I dont find no Pawanek at Antibes. Clio64 (d) 21 mai 2008 à 10:48 (CEST)[répondre]
  • Flegel, Mulhouse in 34 and 35, formerly Wacker and Burgtheater
  • Karl Leithner, Metz in fall 35, however did not receive release from Austrian Federation and had to return, so maybe did not play at all
  • Engelbert Boesch, Mulhouse in 36/37
  • Eduard Scheer (formerly with Helfort), went to Roubaix in late 37, however an article in early March 38 reports that due to an injury he hadn't yet played a game, so I'm not sure if he ever did

Some other infos:

  • The Hugarian goalkeeper Ferenc Weinhardt (mentioned above by me) was at Rouen in D2, so he is correctly not on the list. Also the above mentioend Ondrej played for Amiens while they were in D2.
  • The reason you couldn't find the name Stolzparth in Alès' lineups is that Barreaud lists both versions of his last name, Somlai (the Hungarianised version) and Stolzparth (or maybe Stolpart), but not his first name (Resző). And a Somlai can be found in Alès' team for the 35/36 season (see here).
  • I found a short newspaper info that Sas (the one who played in France) formerly played for Újpest.
  • Barreaud lists a player called Josef Wana, who came from Wacker. While there was a player by this name at Wacker (he even was an Austrian A international in 1922), he had ended his career and became a coach in the early 1930s. The player who played at Strasbourg was Johann Wana (see here), who played for Rapid reserves and later in the Czech league for DSV Saaz in the mid 1930s.
  • I doubt that E. Hartong was Austrian or foreign at all. According to this and this his name was Emile Harthong and he was a home grown Alsace player, who came from FA Illkirch Graffenstaden to Racing.
  • As for the German Wilhelm Heiss, there is an interview with Oscar Heisserer in Simon Kuper's book Ajax, the Dutch, the War, in which he identifies Heiss on a team photo of SS Strasbourg and says: "That's a German, Willi Heiss, a very good footballer. He ran away from Germany when Hitler took command, was in the French Legion for five years, than became a professional footballer in Marseille. Was captured and crossed into the German Afrikakorps. Wasn't SS at all. (...) He was shot by an English plane in Tunisia."
  • Mayböck's first name was Josef, he played for Linzer ASK and First Vienna.
  • Zwiebel's first name was Siegfried. Serge was probably the name he acquired in France.
  • As for the two Czechoslovakians from SK Náchod I mentioned earlier, one was František Kuchta. The other one is a little bit of a mystery, because there were two players named Nývlt at Náchod. One was Oldřich Nývlt, who represented the ČSR once in 1935 and whose career in the Czech league has a gap in the 37/38 season. The other one was Jaroslav Nývlt who seemingly was at no Czech first league club in the 34/35 season (but as Náchod were relegated he still might have been with them). So I think there is a good chance that probably both Nývlts played in France, Jaroslav at Nîmes and Oldřich at Red Star. As Jaroslav was a goalkeeper and Oldřich a forward, it should be possible to verify or falsify this based on D1 lineups.
  • Karel Hes was a 5 time Czech international who played for Viktoria Plzeň. According to a newspaper article he had already signed a contract with Montpellier in 1934 but decided to stay at Plzeň. His case was even discussed at the 1934 FIFA congress and he received a suspension.
  • The same problem as with the Nývlts also exists for the Austrian player Chloupek that Barreaud lists as having played at Marseille and Strasbourg. The one who was at Marseille was the former Austrian international Josef Chloupek, who played at FAC, before going to Switzerland from where he arrived in Marseille. In 1935 he returned to Austria and played for FAC and Wiener Sportclub. However there was a a second Chloupek at FAC, whose first name was Franz (they were brothers, six years apart). He scored a lot of goals for them in 1933 and 1934, was transferred to Austria Vienna and made some games for them in the spring of 1935 before disappearing from the line-ups. He was the one who played for Strasbourg.
  • Václav Bára and Václav Bouška both were Czechoslovakian internationals, as was Antonin Moudrý, formerly with Sparta Prague and Žižkov. And the Náchod player identified as Karel Kurdna correctly is spelled Kudrna.
  • Some speculations on other czechoslovakian players (I have rather limited resources, so I have no way of further verification): Blasko might be János Blasko, whose career in the Czech league ends in 1936 at FK Teplitz. Borhm could be a typo and actually be Boehm, in this case it might be Karl (Karel) Böhm, an Austrian who played in the Czech league and whose career has a gap between 1933 (at Náchod) and the 1934/35 season (at Židenice). (I now found an source that says that an Austrian named Böhm played at Nîmes in 1934, so that should be him.) And I wonder if Brabek could be Václav Brabec-Baron, whose Czech league career ends in the 34/35 season at Bohemians Prague.
  • One name that is not on the list is Czechoslovakian international goalkeeper Bohumil "Bonzo" Klenovec. I found two sources that claim he played in France in the 1930s, one of them stating that he was at Stade Rennais. He came to France very young as a student. I have found no information on when this might been exactly, however there is a gap in his league career in 32/33.
  • According to Austrian sources Kastl was Czechoslovakian, was formerly with Reichenberg and after his time in France played at Young Boys Berne. (Barreaud lists him as Austrian)
  • Hungarian Gergely (OK), formerly with Hungária
  • The name Fritz Bauer never is mentioned when Austrian newspapers of the period reported on D1 results. Considering that he played for several years at a top club like RC Strasbourg, this would be very strange. This fact together with that information suggests that he wasn't Austrian.
  • The player named Nemes who was a center forward at Mulhouse in 36/37 was Hungarian, based on an interview with Franz Weselik. (Barreaud lists him as Czechoslovakian)
  • One Austrian sport newspaper in 1934 published the results of an FC Autrichien right after the D1 results. Any idea what this might have been? (I could list the names of the opponents.)

(players listed above have not been double-checked and wait to be add on the list... It will be done in the next hours...) Clio64 (d) 21 mai 2008 à 10:48 (CEST)[répondre]

  • Based on a German reference book, Dalheimer was spelled Dahlheimer, his first name was Karl, he lived 1906-1943, and his club prior and after his years in France was FV Saarbrücken. (Thanks to Wahrerwattwurm)
  • Thanks to de:Benutzer:Peterwuttke's research we know now that contrary to what history books say, the player who scored the historical first D1 goal while with Antibes was not Johann Klima, but his little brother de:Karl Klima (I was able to verify this in the meantime). Johann never played in France.
  • The German international Walter Hanke played at least for parts of the 34/35 season for SK Prostějov and for parts of the 35/36 for DSV Saaz, both in the Czechoslovakian league, so he must have split time between France and the ČSR.
  • Vilim Sipos was not only a yugoslavian international, he also represented Hungary twice as Vilmos Sipos.
  • Westermann: Barreaud lists him as German, but I wonder if this could be Ilja Westermann (also Vestermans), a Latvian international, who played for Hakoah Vienna in 35/36. He wasn't in any of his country's lineups for the three international matches they had during the 37/38 season, in

which according to Barreaud a player named Westermann played at RC Paris.

  • According to a newspaper article Beringer (Barreaud lists him as Romanian) was Hungarian. His first game for Lille was against Sète in late 1933 and Beringer formally was not yet allowed to play, so Sète protested and the Federation decided that the game had to be played again (Lille won the second match by an even higher score than the first one). Curiously the article states that Beringer played in Cuba (?) before coming to France.
  • Friedrich Phoenix: According to this page he was an English player named Albert Fredrick Phoenix.
  • Witschell: While listed as a British player I believe that this is Austrian Anton Witschel, who played for Hertha and Rapid until 1931.

By the way, am I really the only one working on this list? Is actually anybody interested in these findings? --Karloff lugosi (fr) 31 octobre 2007 à 00:06 (CET)[répondre]

I added on the article Championnat de France de football D1 1935-36 datas about games played en goals scored in Division 1 that season. Those numbers come from fhe 1936 Football Almanach. Football was the best french weekly newspaper about football from 1929 to 1944.

There were some more Hungarians playing in France before WWII. In 1939 they were sent home except for a few like Koranyi III who by then obtained French citizenship. There is a book about them that as published a few years ago.

Do you have yearly stats for these players? What are the sources to get this info. Is this book 1936 Football Almanach available somewhere?

Szabo II's last name was Geza he played for Kispest among other clubs. Karoly Kosa (Kohn) was a player of Bocskai and Kispest in Hungary.

Sepers is most likely Imre Seper from Szeged.

The 1936 Football Almanach is, for sure, at the Fédération française de football archives. You can ask to have a copy. I have some pages of that book at home (photocopier). Clio64 (d) 13 janvier 2008 à 22:11 (CET)[répondre]

Opata source[modifier le code]

If you are interested where Szegedi got his source from I can ask him.

Hi Tamaskarpati, I would be very much interested in finding out if Opata actually worked in France. Other than the Szegedi source I also have a German source (a book on the 1924 Olympics) that claims that he played in France for two clubs (Lille in 32/33 and RC Paris in 34/35). Only recently I found a short notice in a Vienna newspaper from early 1934 that said, that Opata intends to coach again in France. So maybe he was not a player but a coach at these clubs.
On a different matter, are you sure that the Guttmann playing at Metz in 32/33 really was Béla? I had the same suspicion when I read the name, but didn't find any proof for it in any of several Guttmann biographies. However I think it might be possible as sources claim that he left New York in the fall of 1932 and the first game he played for Hakoah Vienna after his return was in March 1933. Considering that the ship he travelled on, most likely was set for a French port, there might be a chance that he took the opportunity to play a few games in the French D1 before returning to Vienna. So if you have any proof for this, please let me know. Oh by the way, you can leave your message also on my discussion page in the German Wikipedia, this would be [3]. --Karloff lugosi (fr) 31 octobre 2007 à 00:24 (CET)[répondre]

I left you my email on your discussion page. I think I have a book about Guttmann I can look it up whether he played for Metz. Opata surely coached his old club Mavag SK when he returned to Hungary. His younger brother (Karoly) also played for MAVAG...
