Le prix Newcomb Cleveland est une distinction de l'Association américaine pour l'avancement des sciences (AAAS), décernée chaque année aux auteurs d'articles scientifiques exceptionnels publiés dans les sections Articles de recherche ou Rapports de Science. Créé en 1923, financé par Newcomb Cleveland qui reste anonyme jusqu'à sa mort en 1951, et pendant cette période, il est connu sous le nom de AAAS Thousand Dollar Prize.

Histoire[modifier | modifier le code]

« Le prix a été inspiré par la conviction de M. Cleveland que c'était le scientifique qui comptait et qui avait besoin de l'encouragement qu'une récompense monétaire inattendue pouvait lui apporter. »[1]. Les règles actuelles sont instituées en 1975, auparavant elles sont attribuées aux auteurs d'articles remarquables, représentant une contribution exceptionnelle à la science, présentés lors d'une session ordinaire, sectionnelle ou sociétale, lors de la réunion annuelle de l'AAAS. Il est désormais parrainé par le Fodor Family Trust [2] et comprend un prix de 25 000 $ [3].
