English: the civil war in chili - paying off an old score on the "Almiranre Lynch"
From a sketch by an officer on board an english man-of-war. The Almirante Lynch sank the Blanco Encalada with a torpedo on abril 23rd, and on August 28th the Congressionalist troops, marching through Valparaíso, saw the Almirante Lynch moored toi a buoy, and at once opened a rifle fire which killed almost every man (about 30) on board. The Captain and officers had previously escapedon board the U.S.S San Francisco. Five men endeavoured to escape in a boat, but of them four werw killed and one wounded. Two men also jumped overboard, and swam to the buoy, but wereimmediately picked off the shore. |
