‘The Hanriot HD 1 aeroplanes of my squadron had all of their vertical surfaces (save for the rudder, painted red, yellow and black) and horizontal upper surfaces camouflaged with French camouflage colours, The horizontal undersurfaces were painted an aluminium colour. The colours of the flights were only on the cowling, but the green and white of Olieslagers’ flight were changed after a few days and painted to show equilateral triangles. The vertical stabiliser of the tail was camouflaged, and each pilot had his colours on the upper side of the horizontal empennage. Olieslagers had long white and green triangles.‘My Hanriot had a cocotte for short time, as I had to paint the thistle of the squadron when that badge was decided (during one of my leaves) in spite of my idea that a thistle never attacked! I had a blue and white fan.’
The latter, along with a white cowling, appeared on Coppens’ HD 1s Nos ‘17’ and ‘24’.
Cordialement.
