The article suggests that goggles were rudimentary before Fernez, but glass goggles are documented to have been invented in 1884 by an Okinawan fisherman called Yasutaro Tamagusuku. These goggles (called MIKAGAN in the local Okinawan dialect) were already widely used by the Okinawan southern fishermen by the end of the 19th century. They were solving the fishermen eye diseases issues for the local industry, and dramatically improved productivity of the Itoman fishermen notoriously enriching the region.
