Stephen Lang est né à New York. Il est le fils de Thérèse (née Volmer) et de Eugene Lang, un homme d'affaires-philanthrope. Il est catholique et son père est issu d'une famille juive-hongroise. Il est marié à Kristina Watson, créatrice de costumes et enseignante, depuis le 1 Juin 1980. Ils ont cinq enfants : Lucy, Jane, Noah, Grace, et Daniel. Stephen Lang a fréquenté l'école PS 178 à Jamaïque Estates. Il est diplômé de Swarthmore College en 1973, en littérature anglaise. Le 30 mai 2010, Swarthmore lui a décerné un diplôme honorifique en reconnaissance de sa brillante carrière au théâtre, à la télévision et au cinéma.
