Robert Alexander Farrar Thurman (né le 4 août 1941) est un écrivain et universitaire américain bouddhiste influent et prolifique qui a rédigé, édité ou traduit plusieurs livres sur le bouddhisme tibétain. Il est Professeur Je Tsong Khapa d’Études bouddhistes Indo-tibétains à l'Université Columbia, première chaire dotée dans ce champ d'étude aux États-Unis. Il est aussi cofondateur et président de la Tibet House de New York et, selon Christopher S. Queen, « porte-parole du mouvement Tibet libre » et depuis le début des années 1970, s'est engagé pour la liberté au Tibet[1].

Né à New York, Robert Thurman est le fils d'Elizabeth Dean Farrar, une actrice de théâtre, et de Beverly Reid Thurman, Jr., un rédacteur d'Associated Press et traducteur de l'ONU[2]. Il fait la première partie de ses études à la Phillips Exeter Academy[3] de 1954 à 1958, puis à l'Université Harvard, obtenant un diplôme de Bachelor of Arts en 1962.

Il épouse Marie-Christophe de Menil en 1959 ; ils ont une fille, Taya Thurman. Après un accident en 1961 au cours duquel il perd un œil, il décide de remettre sa vie en cause, divorce et à partir de 1961, voyage en Turquie, en Iran et en Inde. À son retour aux États-Unis en 1962, il commence à étudier le bouddhisme avec Ngawang Wangyal, un Kalmouk de Mongolie qui fonda le premier monastère du bouddhisme tibétain en Amérique du Nord[1]. Il se convertit au bouddhisme et est ordonné moine bouddhiste par le 14e dalaï-lama en 1964, devenant le premier moine américain du bouddhisme tibétain. Il a étudié avec le 14e dalaï-lama, dont il est resté l'ami proche. En 1967, Thurman rend ses vœux de moine pour épouser, en secondes noces, Nena von Schlebrügge (en), un ancien mannequin devenue psychothérapeute, après avoir été l'épouse de Timothy Leary. Thurman et von Schlebrugge ont eu quatre enfants, dont le premier est l'actrice Uma Thurman, suivie de Ganden Thurman, Dechen Thurman et Mipam Thurman.

Il obtient une maîtrise en 1969 et un Ph.D. d'Harvard en études indiennes de sanscrit en 1972. Il est professeur de religion à Amherst College de 1973 à 1988 puis accepte un poste à l'Université Columbia[4]. Time l'a désigné comme étant l'un des vingt-cinq Américains les plus influents en 1997[5].

Le Dr. Thurman est reconnu pour ses traductions et ses explications claires et dynamiques sur le bouddhisme en tant que religion et philosophie, particulièrement se rapportant à l'école Gelugpa du bouddhisme tibétain et son fondateur, Tsongkhapa[citation nécessaire][6],[7].
