Les prix Mythopoeic sont des prix littéraires américains donnés par la Mythopoeic Society et récompensant chaque année depuis 1971 les œuvres de fantasy, ainsi que les essais portant sur le groupe littéraire des Inklings et les essais généralistes portant les mythes et la littérature de fantasy. Les prix sont attribués sur base des votes exprimés par les membres de la société Mythopoeic, organisation sans but lucratif internationale fondée en 1967 aux activités diverses. Les votants proviennent de nombreux pays et les prix sont décernés à l'occasion de l'annuelle convention de la société, l'Annual Mythopoeic Conference (plus connue sous l'abréviation de Mythcon).

Contrairement à d'autres prix comme le Nebula ou le Hugo, les prix Mythopoeic sont donc avant tout une marque de reconnaissance des pairs dans le domaine de la fantasy, puisque les membres de la société Mythopoeic sont avant tout des écrivains et des spécialistes du domaine de la fantasy. C'est également un des seuls prix littéraires exclusivement réservés à la fantasy.

Étymologie du nom du prix[modifier | modifier le code]

Le nom du prix et celui de la société qui le dessert sont inspirés du terme grec mythopoeia (littéralement: créateur de mythes). Ce terme a été forgé au XXe siècle pour désigner un genre littéraire créant ses propres mythologies. Les exemples les plus célèbres sont probablement J. R. R. Tolkien pour son œuvre et C. S. Lewis pour Le Monde de Narnia. Ces deux auteurs font par ailleurs partie du groupe des Inklings, cercle littéraire qui fut l'objet d'étude premier de la société Mythopoeic. On pourrait citer la trilogie À la croisée des mondes, de Philip Pullman, comme exemple récent de mythopoeia.
