Le français est la langue officielle de la République démocratique du Congo. La RDC est, selon certaines estimations[1], le premier pays francophone du monde, devant la France. Il y a quatre autres langues qui ont le statut de langues nationales: kikongo, lingala, swahili et tshiluba.

Le français est la langue officielle depuis l'époque coloniale, quand le pays était sous le régime belge. Par conséquent, le français en RDC a beaucoup de similarités avec le français de Belgique. La langue française a été maintenue comme langue officielle depuis l'époque de l'indépendance, parce qu'elle est largement parlée par les groupes scolarisés du pays, elle est ethniquement neutre et elle facilite la communication entre les différents groupes ethniques du Congo ainsi que les reste de la francophonie.
Selon l'OIF en 2010 il y aurait 78% de la population sachant lire et écrire le français[2] ce nombre atteint les 87% si l'on prend juste ceux qui savent le parler. La République démocratique du Congo est actuellement le pays francophone le plus peuplé.
La plus grande ville Kinshasa est passé de 87% de francophones en 2008 a 92% en 2010[2].
