L'artiste débute sa carrière discographique rock sous le nom de scène John Cougar au milieu des années 1970. Puis, après les premiers succès (l'album American Fool) incluant progressivement des éléments country et folk (violons et accordéon), notamment à partir de l'album The Lonesome Jubilee, il devient John Cougar Mellencamp. Enfin, à la fin des années 1980, il simplifie son nom en John Mellencamp.
