James Thomas Bowman est un contreténor né le 6 novembre 1941 à Oxford en Angleterre.
Il a interprété des opéras, des Oratorios, de la musique contemporaine. Enfant, il a commencé à chanter à la Cathédrale de la Sainte-et-Indivisible-Trinité d’Ely. Puis il a rejoint le New College à Oxford.
James Bowman a fait ses vrais débuts sur scène au Théâtre de l'Odéon à Paris dans le cadre du « Théâtre des Nations » dans le rôle d'Obéron du Songe d'une nuit d'été de Benjamin Britten.
En 1972, il est engagé dans Le Songe d'une nuit d'été et La Mort à Venise, œuvre dans laquelle Britten compose pour lui la "Voix d'Apollon", comme il avait composé spécialement le "Cantique IV" dans The Journey of Magi.
James Bowman a réalisé environ 180 enregistrements avec de nombreux ensembles et chefs d'orchestres dont Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Frans Brüggen, John Eliot Gardiner, Roger Norrington, Christopher Hogwood et Gustav Leonhardt.
En 1992 il a été admis à l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres par le gouvernement français et a reçu la Médaille d'honneur de la Ville de Paris.
Il est gentleman of the « Chapel Royal », ensemble attitré de la royauté anglaise à Londres et co-fondateur avec Bertrand Dazin (contreténor) de La Cathédrale Invisible ensemble de musique baroque pour lequel il a développé d'importantes créations d'œuvres contemporaines en français pour deux contreténors.
