Irvine Welsh est un écrivain écossais né en 1958 à Édimbourg. Quittant l'école à 16 ans, et passant par plusieurs petits boulots tels que réparateur de TV, rien ne le prédestinait à une carrière d'écrivain.
Trainspotting, son premier roman, fut un succès mondial, adapté au théâtre puis au cinéma par Danny Boyle. Irvine Welsh fait une apparition dans le film dans le rôle d'un dealer aux côtés d'Ewan McGregor.
