Homotherium est un félin à dent de sabre, proche de Machairodus et de Smilodon (« tigre à dents de sabre ») ; il est caractérisé par ses longues pattes, sa tête longue et fine, ses dents plutôt « en burin » qu'« en sabre » et sa queue courte.
