Description
English: NASA satellite photo : Southern coast of Cuba, southern parts of the Mayabeque Province, Matanzas Province and Cienfuegos Province : Zapata Peninsula, enclosing on its north side the Ensenada de la Broa (light yellowish blue) which opens into the Gulf of Batabanó (turquoise blue). South-east of the peninsula : Gulf of Cazones and further east the Bay of Pigs. Cayo Largo near the bottom border of the picture. Looking W-N-W. Note how the tiny cayo Piedras, out to see in front of Bay of Pigs, is at the tip of a large triangular zone (light blue) that spreads up to cayos Blancos del Sul near the coast; that zone is included in the national park and the biosphere reserve and is the only marine area where both protected zones spread out so far at sea.
The Zapata Peninsula is essentially covered by the Zapata Swamp, a national park which is part of the larger Ciénaga de Zapata Biosphere Reserve.
