Le bleu égyptien (PB 31) est un pigment bleu, utilisé par les anciens Égyptiens à partir de la IVe dynastie, aussi connu sous le nom de fritte de bleu égyptien.
Il était produit à partir de verre coloré écrasé en fine poudre. Il est considéré comme le premier pigment synthétique.
Il s'agit d'un silicate de calcium cuivre : (CaCuSi4O10 ou CaO·CuO·4SiO2)
Connu des Romains sous le nom de caeruleum, Vitruve y fait mention dans son De architectura, sa technique de fabrication se perd ensuite vers le IVe siècle[1].
Il était plus clair et résistant à la lumière que l'autre bleu de l'époque obtenu à partir d'azurite.
