Description
| Description | Built in 2005-2009, this Contemporary skyscraper was designed by Adrian Smith of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill to serve as the Trump International Hotel and Tower Chicago. The building soars 98 stories above the Chicago River and houses a hotel, condominiums, retail space, and has a spire that soars to 1,388 feet (423 meters) above the ground level. The building became the fifth-tallest building in the United States upon its completion, having been scaled down from its originally intended status as the tallest building after the September 11, 2001 attacks. The building sits on a slightly irregular parallelogram-shaped site bounded by the Chicago River, the bend of Wabash Avenue, and the right-of-way of Kinzie Street, which has been mostly converted into a pedestrianized area, which leads to a quite distinctive form for the building. The building is largest at the base, with the first setback corresponding to the cornice line of the nearby Wrigley Building to the east, the second setback corresponding to the base of the cupola of the Jewelers Building across the Chicago River, and the third being at the level of the roofline of the IBM Building just to the east, with the southern and northern corners of the building being rounded. The central tower of the building features a spire on the north side, which stands more than 200 feet tall. The exterior of the building is clad in a glass curtain wall, with spandrels wrapping the building at the tops of the setbacks and the tower, and a base with pilotis made up of columns with cylindrical metal panel surrounds, sheltering and containing the building’s entrances and first three floors at street level, as well as the first level of the riverwalk along the Chicago River to the south. The building is the tallest 21st Century building on the Chicago skyline, and is today Chicago’s third-tallest building, with only the John Hancock Center (1969) and Sears Tower (1974) being taller. |
