DescriptionSt. Louis Limestone (Middle Mississippian; Route 460 roadcut south of Frenchburg, Kentucky, USA) 3 (46672347301).jpg
Limestone in the Mississippian of Kentucky, USA.
This is the St. Louis Limestone, as exposed in a roadcut near Frenchburg, Kentucky. A fossil coral zone occurs in this unit - they were ripped up and tossed by ancient storms. The corals have been silicified. Eroded-out corals are common in area creeks. Paleokarst occurs in places in the St. Louis Limestone at this site. When the cut was fresh, a small paleocave here had speleothem. Speleothem can be collected in area creeks, too. Some barite masses occur at this locality, a few meters above the base of the St. Louis. The top of the St. Louis has a paleosol profile.
